WMINFO! v1.02 Page 1
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
WMINFO! is a utility designed to read the contents of the activity
log file produced by WILDMAIL! v2.02 (and higher) and produce
various statistical reports and display screens (files) for use in
WILDCAT! v3.00 and higher.
Depending on the degree of reporting desired, individual reports
may also be generated for your downlink nodes (systems that pickup
echo/netmail from your system). WMINFO! will then generate the
appropriate netmail message(s) and compress the reports into a ZIP
file and then place it in the proper directory for your mailer to
automatically send to your nodes. Additional features like log
file maintenance and automatic configuration make it easy to
utilize this information and simplifies the installation.
ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTATION
This document is a reference manual on installing and using
WMINFO!. Since WMINFO! requires the use of a log file generated
by WILDMAIL!, if you don't already use WILDMAIL!, this program
won't be of much use to you. If you do, you will be pleased to see
how much it can do for you!
PROGRAM AUTHOR
WMINFO! v1.02 was written by Joe Martin of Online Computer
Resources with a helping hand from the author of WILDMAIL! v3.00's
configuration program (WMCONFIG!) Eric Cozzi.
This programs intent was to provide a means with which to measure
conference and individual node's activity and to provide a stepping
stone to an efficient and easy to use method of cost accounting for
use when WILDMAIL! v3.00 is released.
With the release of WMINFO! unfolds a whole new era in echomail
management. We plan on evolving this product into a complete stand
alone program that operates much in the same manner that MSI's
WCPRO! does. A simple front end menuing system to control a very
powerful program which will provide detailed accounting of mail
activity in just about any facet of echomail the user desires.

EVALUATION KEY
30 DAY EVALUATION KEY
WMINFO! utilizes a special file to activate its usage for a period
of 30 days. This method allows the program to be fully utilized
with all options enabled for the duration of the evaluation period.
If the product hasn't been registered after the thirty days,
WMINFO! will inform you it has expired and will simply cease to
run.
Since the current method of distribution prevents a "dated" key
file from be included in WMINF101.ZIP, you must dial up the support
board (listed below) and create this special key file. Selecting
the "Create WMIN.ID Key File" option from the Main Menu initiates
this process and you simply enter in the required information and
then follow the instructions for downloading.
The WMINFO! support board may reached by dialing:
(510) 687-0236 - USR v32/HST
(510) 687-2134 - v32bis
Only one key per person/registration number will be allowed.

INSTALLATION
FILES INCLUDED
Your WMINFO! installation kit is distributed in a file called
WMINF102.ZIP and contains these files:
README.1ST Comments and any last minute changes.
REGISTER.DOC Form used to simplify product registration.
WMINFO.EXE The executable.
WMINFO.DOC This documentation file.
EX-NODES.LST Sample ASCII text file containing the node
addresses to exclude from the various reports.
EX-CONFS.LST Sample ASCII text file containing the
conference names to exclude from the reports.
INSTALLATION
Installation and setup of WMINFO! is relatively simple and straight
forward. Outlined below is the recommended procedure when
installing the program.
1) Using PKUNZIP, uncompress the WMINF102.ZIP into your existing
WILDMAIL directory. (Possibly C:\WILDMAIL) This is very
important as WMINFO! must be EXECUTED from the WILDMAIL!
directory because it reads/uses various configuration files
that WILDMAIL! also uses.
2) Use the CD\ command and change directories to the directory
you just un-compressed the WMINF101.ZIP file in.
2) Edit the EX-NODES.LST and EX-CONFS.LST as appropriate. Refer
to the section (in this DOC file) for these files
configuration requirements for specific details. Please note,
these files are not required and are only used if they exist
in the same directory as WILDMAIL!.
3) Depending on what information you'd like WMINFO! to produce,
enter WMINFO followed by the desired command line parameters
and WMINFO! will take off from there. By entering WMINFO ?,
a complete list of available command line parameters will be
displayed.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 4
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
At present, there's 13 different command line parameters which can
be used when executing WMINFO!. By command line parameters, we
mean they are added to the line that you execute WMINFO from. For
example:
WMINFO /C /H /L:WM-1192.LOG /A:AREAS.TMP
The exact ordering of the parameters on the command line is
insignificant as long as each parameter's requirements are adhered
to. All parameters must be separated by a space as shown above.
Following is a breakdown of each of these and their usage.
/L:<filename.ext>
This parameter is used to override the specified log file name
as found in the WM.CFG file. This could be useful if you wish
to process a specific months log file which uses a different
name and possibly resides in a different sub-directory on a
different drive.
Example Usage: WMINFO /L:C:\TEMP\WM-1192.LOG
Please note that there MUST NOT be any spaces between the /L:
and the DOS path and file name as shown above. If only the
file name is specified, it's assumed to be in the current sub-
directory.
/A:<filename.ext>
This parameter functions EXACTLY the same as the above /L:
parameter does with the exception that this will override the
default areas file name of AREAS.BBS and allow you to specify
which file name you wish to use. As with the /L: parameter,
complete DOS path names are allowed.
Example Usage: WMINFO /A:C:\AREAS.TMP
This file is used to specify which echomail area (conference)
that is to be associated with a given conference number within
WILDCAT!. This file also specifies the downlink node
address(es) that pickup and send mail with your system.
It should noted that there's nothing that needs to be done to
this file to use WMINFO!. WMINFO! simply reads the file for
the conference specific information and then carries on.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 5
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
/Q
When operating WMINFO!, a statistical screen is presented with
complete information about the totals and activity being
reported. This option is used to turn off the statistics
screen thereby saving a bit of the CPU's resources and
possibly speeding up the processing time.
Example Usage: WMINFO /Q
/C
WMINFO! generates 5 different files for use as display files
within WILDCAT!. There's 2 different versions of the same
files that can be produced depending on the use (non-use) of
this command line parameter.
The default version (by omitting this parameter) creates
WMINFO1.ASC thru WMINFO5.ASC in the current directory. These
are standard ASCII text type files that can be used for
printing at a later date in time if so desired.
Using this option will instruct WMINFO! to automatically
insert the WILDCAT! specific @nn@ color codes and change the
extension of the file name from .ASC to .BBS leaving the
primary name the same (WMINFO1 thru WMINFO5). Then via a user
defined batch file, these files could then be renamed
appropriately and copied into their respective directories.
Shown below is a brief description of each of these files.
WMINFO1.BBS Echomail Summary Information
WMINFO2.BBS Regular Mail Packet Activity
WMINFO3.BBS Visiting Node Mail Packet Activity
WMINFO4.BBS Echomail Conference Activity
WMINFO5.BBS PassThru Conference Activity
/N
When WMINFO! creates the above display files, it includes the
default headers and footers. For those that wish to use their
own custom headers and footers, this option can be specified
to turn these off. If this option is selected, it would now
be up to the user to create a batch file that will add in the
desired headers and footers.
For example, let's say the you wish to create a output file
called HELLO9.BBS, placed in the C:\WC30\DISP directory using
a header file called HEADER.BBS and a footer file called
FOOTER.BBS.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 6
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
The batch file "section" to accomplish this would be something
like:
@echo off
cd\wildmail
copy HEADER.BBS+WMINFO1.BBS+FOOTER.BBS C:\WC30\DISP\HELLO9.BBS
If the /C parameter is used in conjunction with the /N option,
the color codes are left untouched in the BODY of the report,
so any desired colors in the header and footers would then be
the users responsibility to ensure they are properly defined.
FILE NAMING CONVENTIONS
WMINFO! has the ability to create up to 3 different reports on a
node by node basis. So if you take that figure and multiply it by
75 possible downlink node addresses, you can see that this can add
up to a rather large amount of report files being generated.
To accommodate this situation, WMINFO! produces a sequence of
numbered reports prefixed by the reports type. Shown below are the
available reports and their possible file names.
RECVD-08.RPT This is the mail received report generated for
node 08 via the /D parameter.
NDMSG-08.RPT This is the report generated for all the mail
on a daily basis that was sent to (or packed
up for) node 08 via the /M parameter.
SUMRY-08.RPT This is the summary report of all the mail
sent to node 08 via the /T parameter.
The number found in the file name is one generated internally by
WMINFO! and in no way relates to the node's actual Fido style
address. Using this method of file name assignment makes it easy
for WMINFO! to keep track of what file(s) go to what node addresses
depending on what command line parameters were used at execution
time.
The downside to this method is that it's difficult to know what
report goes to what node address when a human looks at the file
name. The only way to know for sure is to actually view the
contents of the report. But considering that WMINFO! has the
ability to automatically bundle up each respective node's reports
automatically, it's usually of little concern for the person
generating the reports.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 7
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
To put this into perspective, all reports numbered xxxxx-08.RPT are
created for the same Fido style node address and different numbers
indicate different addresses.
COMPRESSING REPORTS FOR DELIVERY
By selecting the /G command line parameter (in conjunction with any
combination of /T /M /D parameters) this instructs WMINFO! to use
PKware's PKZIP.EXE utility to compress the selected reports and
place them in the OUTBOUND directory as defined in the WM.CFG file
found in the \WILDMAIL directory. WMINFO! also creates a Netmail
message with the attached archive name of the compressed reports
(in the subject line) and places it in the MATRIXMAIL directory as
also defined in WM.CFG file.
Unfortunately this is the only compression format supported at this
time due in part to the way each compression utility differently
handles the screen displays. In the future, look to see this
changed to use the compression format defined by the TYPEPACK node
specific definition found in the WM.CFG file.
If the /G parameter is omitted when using the any combination of
the /T /M /D command line parameters, the generated reports will
remain the \WILDMAIL directory for later review.
EMS USAGE
WMINFO! automatically detects the presence of EMS memory and will
make use of it if there is sufficient room to store the contents
of memory to when it swaps out (creates another copy of
COMMAND.COM) to execute the compression utility PKZIP.EXE.
If there isn't enough EMS memory available, then the swapping will
be done to disk instead. Once the compression process has been
completed, WMINFO! will swap itself back into base memory either
from EMS (or disk) and continue on.
HUB SPECIFIC REPORTS
Currently WMINFO! only supports one Hub specific report. Shown
below is the command line parameter that can be used to invoke this
report.
/H
This parameter is designed to get a quick overall look at how
all the conferences are operating on your system. The report
produced is called DTL-HUB.RPT and is created in the \WILDMAIL
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 8

directory. Information like daily totals, accumulative totals
and downlink nodes receiving each conference can often times
be useful in determining not only conference specific
activity, but also any interruptions in the mail flow.
When this report is generated, normal pagination is active for
easy viewing when you want to print the report. Shown below
is a sample format report.
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

This field is used to indicate either of two possible
values. A number displayed here represents the actual
WILDCAT! conference number and the letter P is used to
indicate this conference is a pass-thru type.
Echomail Area -
This field displays the complete Fido style area name.
This should not be confused with the WILDCAT! conference
description.
01..04 -
The numbers displayed here are the actual days of the
month that WMINFO! is reporting activity on. Two
different sets of information are maintained on a daily
basis. The top portion indicates the message tossed
(Ts) into the system and the bottom portion indicates
the number of messages that have been extracted (Ex)
from your system. By extracted, we mean callers have
physically entered new messages onto your system and
WILDMAIL! has extracted them and sent them out into the
network. Any values of 0 are indicated by a single dash
'-' character for easier viewing.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 9
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
WMINFO! currently supports up to 31 days of activity to
report upon. This means the report will automatically
adjust itself by adding in the appropriate day columns
and adjusting the sizes of the headers. Because this
report can be rather wide, if you want to print this
out, you might have to put your printer into condensed
mode to have it all fit on a single page.
Because your WM.LOG file can be any length, WMINFO! will
only produce a report of the FIRST 31 days of the log
file. If you wish to report any additional information,
you should use the /S (Split Log File) command line
parameter first and then re-execute WMINFO!.
MsgTotals -
This field indicates the accumulative totals for the
days in the report. "Ts" is used to indicate messages
tossed and "Ex" indicates messages extracted.
Nodes -
This field is used to indicate the number of nodes that
are picking up mail from you for this conference.
SORT FIELD SELECTION
/E
By default, conference areas processed by WMINFO! are sorted
by conference number with P (passthrus) heading the list.
Using this command line parameter will override the default
sort and use the conference AREA name as the primary sort
field. This is handy when reading the various reports.
NODE SPECIFIC REPORTS
WMINFO! will generate reports for only those node addresses found
in the AREAS.BBS file at execution time. Since any number of
"outside node addresses" can be recorded in your WM.LOG file,
WMINFO! limits the report generation to only these nodes.
Shown below is a list of the different reports available and it's
respective command line parameter.
/D
WMINFO! has the ability to generate on a daily basis, for each
node found in the AREAS.BBS file, a report of every .PKT file
that each node has sent to your system. As was mentioned
earlier, this report is named RECVD-xx.RPT (where xx equals
a temporary node number). Shown below is a sample report.

Most all of the information shown above is self-explanitory,
but we'll cover it here anyway.
Time -
This is the time of day in 24 hour format that the
packet was created (not the processing time). This
column will show the time for the first PKT and then any
remaining PKT file(s) with the same time will have this
redundant information removed for easier viewing.
Packet Name -
This is the DOS file name of the packet.
Pkt Size -
The uncompressed DOS file size.
Conf -
This field displays the number of different conferences
that messages were created for from within this packet.
Toss -
The total number of messages that were tossed from this
packet. This should not be confused with total number
of messages that were forwarded, but rather the total
number of messages contained within this PKT file.
Sent To Address -
This is fairly straight forward here. This is the
address that the PKT file has been addressed to.
At the bottom of the report is a summary total for the entire
days activities.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 11
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
This report is generated somewhat differently than the way the
others are. This is due in part to the sheer size that these
reports could be. So WMINFO! will produce this information
"on the fly" while the processing of the log file is in
progress. You'll notice the effect of additional disk
activity while WMINFO! pauses processing for a moment and
writes this information to disk before proceeding on with the
log analysis.
/T
The report generated here contains node specific summary
information about the mail SENT to their system. This means
WILDMAIL! running on your system has forwarded this mail on
TO them. The report is generated in the \WILDMAIL directory
and is appropriately named SUMRY-xx.RPT (where xx is an
arbitrary number generated by WMINFO! to keep track of the
individual node addressees) Because of the clarity of this
report, most all the options are self-explanitory.

WMINFO! v1.02 Page 12
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
/M
Using this command line parameter when executing WMINFO! will
produce a report similar to the /H (Hub Report) except it only
indicates the mail SENT to the node address. The report
generated is called NDMSG-xx.RPT where xx equals the temporary
node address used by WMINFO!. The same format and layout
otherwise is identical to the /H report including the
automatic pagination.
/G
This option is used to have WMINFO! ZIP up the selected
reports and generate the Netmail message necessary for
transmission to the downlink nodes. This option requires the
use of any combination of the /T /M /D parameters. (it needs
at least one report to send!) If this option is NOT used with
the /T, /M, or /D parameters, the reports are simply left in
the \WILDMAIL directory.
WMINFO! will read the contents of the WM.CFG file for the
location of where to put the Netmail message and where the
compressed file containing the reports should be moved to
(this is the outbound directory). When this option is used,
WMINFO! will "clean up" after itself by deleting the files in
the \WILDMAIL directory and placing the ZIP files into the
OUTBOUND directory.
NETMAIL MESSAGE GENERATION
WMINFO! creates a standard Netmail message using the FROM: name as
"WMINFO!" and is addressed TO: "SysOp". The message status flag
settings are: PRIVATE, FILE, KILLSENT and LOCAL. The body of the
message contains a simple one line message and a tear line
indicating the message was generated by WMINFO!.
Because WMINFO! executes PKZIP.EXE to do the compressing of the
reports, WMINFO! creates a temporary batch file in the \WILDMAIL
directory called IN-PACK.BAT. This file is what's used to execute
PKZIP when WMINFO! swaps itself out of memory. Once the
compression process is complete, WMINFO! swaps itself back into
memory, deletes the IN-PACK.BAT file and then exits.
As was mentioned earlier, this is the ONLY compression program
currently supported, but look to see that change in future releases
of the program.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 13
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
Because the reports generated are file attaches and since the
KILLSENT flag is set, the mailer will normally delete the Netmail
messages automatically after successful transmission. The attached
file however will remain in the OUTBOUND directory. You should
therefore periodically check the outbound directory and manually
delete these files otherwise they will end up taking up disk space
unnecessarily.
SPLITTING OF THE LOG FILE
WMINFO! has the ability to divide up the log file on a monthly
basis allowing you to better manage the size of this log file.
Currently, only monthly log splitting is available and if demand
dictates a change, this will be added into a future release.
Shown below is a description of the split log file option.
/S
This command line parameter is used to split the log file on
a monthly basis. Using this parameter will override any other
valid parameters except the /L:<filename> and terminates upon
completion. When executed, WMINFO! will use the default log
file name found in WM.CFG unless the /L:<filename> option is
used. It will proceed to copy the contents to a file using
the standard naming convention of WM-mmyy.LOG where "mm"
indicates the month and "yy" displays the year.
Because WMINFO! has no idea how long the log presently is, it
will create as many files as is necessary (on a monthly
basis). However, if the log file contains less than a full
months worth of activity, WMINFO! will display a message
indicating so and the log file will remain intact.
Whenever you use this parameter, WMINFO! will ALWAYS create
a .BAK (backup file) of the log file in case something goes
wrong during the split process. Because this is done as a
safety measure, it will be up to you to manually delete this
backup file.
EXCLUDING INFORMATION FROM REPORTS
WMINFO! has the ability to limit the inclusion of conference areas
and node addresses from the various reports. This option is useful
for displaying specific conference information and for limiting
which node addresses are to have reports generated for them.
WMINFO! v1.02 Page 14
EXCLUDING NODE ADDRESSES
For both node and conference exclusions, WMINFO! uses a standard
ASCII text type file as a lookup table for automatic reference.
The basic requirements are that only one item PER LINE you wish to
have excluded (either a node address or conference name depending
on what file is used) and that no spaces exist WITHIN the address
or conference name as defined. Shown below is a description of the
various files.
EXCLUDING NODE ADDRESSES
EX-NODES.LST is used to specify which node address you do NOT want
WMINFO! to generate reports for. This is commonly used to exclude
your HUB addresses because typically information created for your
HUB is just backwards of your downlink nodes. After all, this is
mail SENT to them so if you generated reports for them, it would
not indicate the conference activity except for mail that was
extracted from either your system or your downlink node addresses
systems.
As was mentioned above, this is a line by line ASCII text file with
one COMPLETE <zone:net/node> node address per line. A complete
address is necessary because WMINFO! doesn't assume any network or
zone address, so it needs the full address!
If the node address you wish to exclude is a point, then add the
point number to the end of the address such as 1:161/123.1,
otherwise do NOT put in the assumed point address of '.0'. In
other words, if this is a regular node address, use 1:161/123
instead of 1:161/123.0. (These are example addresses only!)
Any node address entered in the AREAS.BBS file can be specified in
this file. When WMINFO! executes, it searches the WILDMAIL!
directory for the presence of this file and if it exists, then
records the various addresses found.
EXCLUDING CONFERENCES
EX-CONFS.LST can contain a list of COMPLETE echomail AREA names you
wish to have excluded from the WMINFO1 - WMINFO5.BBS/ASC series of
display files created for WILDCAT!. Because reports are generated
on a node by node basis, it wouldn't be practical to exclude
conferences from the /H /M /T reports because those reports make
extensive use of that information.
This file works exactly the same as EX-NODES.LST does except in the
place of the node address, you simply enter in the COMPLETE area
name (as found in the AREAS.BBS file). Only one area name per line
with uppercase/lowercase being insignificant. Just make sure
there's no spaces in the middle of the area name and only one name
exists per line.

SPECIFICATIONS
SPECIFICATIONS
WMINFO! has been designed to operate in a wide variety of different
environments and system configurations. WMINFO! is fully DESQview
aware, thus will run properly when executed in a DV window.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
WMINFO! memory needs are dictated by the number of conferences
(including passthru areas) you have on your system. Or more
correctly, the number of conferences defined in your AREAS.BBS
file. The memory requirements work out something like 525K
required for 1,000 conferences and only 325K for 400 conferences.
PROCESSING SPEED
WMINFO! has been designed from the ground up to optimize the
processing speed as much as possible. While we think you'll be
satisfied with the performance, the basic processing is completely
dependant on the number of conferences your system carries.
In other words, since WMINFO! maintains conference specific
information, the more conferences you have, the longer it takes to
search for each conferences "storage area" before its statistics
can be updated.
CONFERENCES SUPPORTED
WMINFO! presently supports in excess of 1,000 conferences. While
initial testing revealed 1,200 conferences (including passthrus)
only used a little over 560K of RAM, this should cover the vast
majority of systems currently.
NODES SUPPORTED
Presently, WMINFO! supports up to 75 downlink node addresses. In
an effort to reduce the overall memory usage, this number has been
set to this value. Should the need arise to have support for more
node addresses, please contact Online Computer Resources. This is
a real simple change.

30 DAY EVALUATION COPY
WMINFO! v1.02 is a fully functional, full featured activity log
analyzer for WILDMAIL! v2.02+. This program is not disabled in any
way but does require the use of a special 30 day evaluation key.
This key is obtainable by dialing the WMINFO! support BBS at the
number listed above.
This temporary key will allow WMINFO! to run FOR 30 DAYS without
registration, after which, the program will simply cease to run.
This should be sufficient time to properly evaluate the program for
fitness prior to its actual registration.
After you register the program, you will receive the WMIN.ID file
and then by placing it in the \WILDMAIL directory, it will
reactivate the program for normal use.
PRODUCT REGISTRATION
We are releasing WMINFO! at a special introductory price of $15
plus $2 shipping/handling up UNTIL the release of WILDMAIL! v3.00.
After WILDMAIL!'s v3.00 release, the price will go up to $25 (plus
$2 S/H). The best thing you can do is register the product BEFORE
the price goes up and enjoy the $10 savings.
Included in the ZIP archive you received WMINFO! in is a file
called REGISTER.DOC. This file should be used when mailing in your
registration. All payments made by check will have a 10 day hold
on them until the check has had time to clear the bank prior to
shipment. You may also register WMINFO! by picking up the phone
and dialing (510) 687-1122 and placing your order by voice. Be
sure and have your credit card handy. This is by far the fastest
and most efficient manner as the registered key files are usually
put up for download before 5pm PST daily.
